Here at Ideal Weight, we love keeping an eye on all the weird and wonderful awareness days, weeks and months such as 'Chocolate Milkshake Day' which took place 12th September. However, as novel as some of these days are, many hold an important message such as 'Better Breakfast Month' which coincidentally is September!

The most important meal of the day!

We have all heard the saying 'breakfast is the most important meal of the day' but apparently this hasn’t stopped over a third of British people by-passing breakfast, with 1 in 10 reporting they never eat it, and those who do spending an average of just 9.8 minutes sitting down to eat in the morning. Breakfast is important for getting your metabolism up to speed and it has been proven that if you eat a good breakfast, then you are likely to make better food choices throughout the day.

A study undertaken by the University of Bath found that 

“people who eat breakfast burn more calories throughout the day and have tighter blood sugar control than test subjects who skipped breakfast”

So if you didn’t realise that skipping breakfast doesn’t help you lose weight, then this study definitely supports the ‘better breakfast’ notion.

Other research has shown that breakfast helps you to focus better. It also makes you more likely to engage in physical activity and skipping breakfast makes you more likely to over eat for lunch and dinner.

Why do so many people skip breakfast?

Whether it is an issue of not having enough time, not liking typical breakfast foods, or thinking that skipping breakfast is a good way to diet, there are many reasons why around 20 million Brits go without breakfast. Others may put skipping breakfast down to not feeling hungry first thing in the morning but it is important to retrain your body so that you don’t miss out on the health benefits of a good breakfast.
